Subject: Songs conveying messages relevant to the modern world.
Duration: 45 min.
Aim and description: Listening to while watching videos of authentic songs (The Beatles), exchanging opinions in order to produce a written response justifying their choice made through the process of jukebox jury.
Materials: Laptop, projector, speakers, power point presentation Beatles mania.ppt (228 kB), photocopies of song lyrics, photocopies of derivatives grid and exercise. See URL for lyrics and videos https://www.lyricstube.net/
Procedure
Step 1: Warm up (3 min).
Questions: Do you know the Beatles? Why still popular?
Presenting the advertisement in the Rolling Stone magazine and inviting them to take part in a competition with a view to winning prizes.
Objective: Providing motivation to students to perceive this as a real life task.
Step 2: Presenting new vocabulary.
Objective : To understand unknown words and hidden meanings in the lyrics.
Step 3: Watching the youtube video of the song.
Step 4: Getting students into groups to discuss and write the message of the song.
Objective: To do group work where one in each team acts as a secretary and writes the message.
Step 5: Reporting findings to the class.
Step 6+7: Repeating the procedure for the second and third songs.
Step 8: Voting for the best song, giving points on a scale from 1 to 5 (as a group) taking into consideration the criteria set by the magazine.
Objective: To take part in a relaxing activity.
Step 9: Writing the beginning of the letter in their groups.
Step 10: Assigning homework. Filling in the gaps with derivatives in the photocopy provided.

THINKING BEHIND THE BOX
Using songs in a classroom, a practice, we as teachers have being trying for the past two decades in our classrooms becomes an even more valuable tool nowadays with the downloadable uTube videos.
The songs chosen become more meaningful because they are about issues of interest to teenagers but also because of the way they are presented, the power of image. They foster a relaxed, stress free atmosphere in the classroom, where a variety of themes can be discussed, and as in today’s lesson they can provide a stimulus for writing, which if done in groups can prove an excellent opportunity to share knowledge about grammar etc.
This final point is of utmost importance for First Grade Senior High School pupils where a lot of emphasis should be placed on teaching writing and exposing them to as much written work as possible, as they are asked to produce a written piece of 150 words in their final exam.
With all these in mind, I chose songs and a class vote (jukebox jury) to give them input in an area they are familiar with (they are a very musical group) and also to make the whole activity challenging and meaningful.
